Early this morning there were three Ruddy Turnstones on the beach with the
Sanderling/Snowy flock between Moraga and Noriega. The continuing bright
bird photographed by many continued, and two duller individuals were
nearby, though I didn’t check their vintage. I ran into Jahvin after
seeing the dull pair, and he refound the bright bird, and might also have
photos.
Another Red-breasted Nuthatch was just east of the Beach Chalet later in
the morning.

Migrants were almost non-existent on today's GGAS Field Trip at Fort Mason (a WESTERN FLYCATCHER and a WESTERN TANAGER), but we had better luck with birds of prey, with the highlight being an adult BALD EAGLE that flew over heading south a little before 11 am. Earlier we had great scope looks at one of the resident GREAT HORNED OWLS, and an OSPREY flew over heading east.

Subject: [SFBirds] Another Oak Titmouse
Happy Sunday SFBirders,

While doing some chores and listening to the Giants game on the radio, I heard an interesting call in the backyard. I was shocked to see an OAK TITMOUSE visiting my seed cake feeder along with a House Finch. The bird snacked for 20-30 seconds and then flew off to the south.

If the bird returns and establishes a pattern, I will do my best to accommodate viewing requests as much as possible, though my schedule is relatively full this week so I appreciate your understanding.

Fall is starting up and this is an additional data point for certain California interior species irrupting to the coast. Keep those eyes and ears open, even at home!

Good birding all,

Kimberlie Moutoux has volunteered at Alcatraz as a Waterbird Docent with the National Park Service since 2019. She provides information to visitors about the breeding population during the breeding season, March to August, when the wintering population swells from 400 to 30,000 birds. In the winter, she co-leads the winter bird counts. This year, she is collaborating with a small team to monitor nesting behavior on the island and observe disturbance events involving Western Gulls. At Alcatraz, there are seven species of waterbirds—Western Gull, Pigeon Guillemot, Brandt’s Cormorant, Snowy Egret, Black-crowned Night-heron, and Great Blue Heron.

Kimberlie is also a practicing artist at the Sanchez Art Center, creating data -driven art quilts based on her research. Kimberlie will share stories from Alcatraz and some of her artwork.

This brought us to a record 277 species through the end of July. You can access the complete year list at https://sfbirds.net/2026-city-cumulative. Subject: [SFBirds] Marine Madness 8/10 San Francisco county STREAKED SHEARWATER etc
Hi all,

Today, August 10th, a boat full of birders ventured out from Sausalito
Harbor to the deep water far off of the continental shelf including the
northern edge of the Pioneer Seamount. Warm waters offshore have continued
to provide interesting conditions and an influx of species not normally
found in our region.

The day started in overcast weather and reasonable wind. As we left the
harbor and the typical stream of nearshore species, Lucas Stephenson and
Eddie Monson started shouting out "BLACK TERN!!!" The bird paralleled the
boat and ascended into the sky until we lost it in the fog. This was the
start of many highlights to come.

As we headed off but were still relatively inshore, calls came out of a
MANX SHEARWATER zipping by. Our first Pink-foots and Buller's came by the
boat, as well as some Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers.

Numbers of seabirds in the waters between the shore and the Farallons are
typically low, and were spiced up only by a couple Tufted Puffins as we
passed Northwest Farallon Island. As we crossed over the shelf break, birds
started to materialize. The first Storm-Petrel of the day took the form of
Wilson's flying in front of the bow. A smattering of Ashy and Black
Storm-Petrels appeared, along with some jaegers and Sabine's Gulls. As we
left the shelf edge and the associated temperature break, birds thinned out
again and made way for the "Pelagic Desert" ecosystem characteristic of the
far offshore waters of Northern California.

Nonetheless, we charged on, with smaller numbers of birds along the way. It
was during this time in the pelagic desert that a couple species
characteristic of more southern warm-water ecotypes came by: a mostly
dark-rumped Leach's Storm-Petrel (likely a "CHAPMAN'S" LEACH'S
STORM-PETREL) and a FLYING FISH sailed away from the boat. Both of these
species have a typically more southern distribution. The Flying Fish that
are showing up (which is apparently likely a Bennett's Flying Fish) are
almost never found north of Southern California Waters, even by fishermen
who spend weeks every summer on the water. Occasionally during large El
Niño events they have reached as far north as Monterey Bay, but before this
year I have never heard of one off of the Bay Area. This year, however,
this is at least the third pelagic to record this taxon, a significant
northward movement indeed. The Leach's is somewhat similar. In warm water
years they will occasionally reach far offshore regions such as Davidson
Seamount and likely Guide and Pioneer Seamounts. However, the encoursion of
them this year even from boats just at the shelf edge at Pioneer Canyon is
remarkable.

After spinning around the north end of the Pioneer Seamount we started to
head back towards shore. It was then that a young female COCOS BOOBY flew
right by the boat. The bird headed along the length of the boat then peeled
off.

We were now headed back into harbor and were just 14 miles offshore. Most
of the boat was silently napping in the cabin or back while a few birders
still diligently scanned through the Sooty Shearwater flocks. That is when
the call came out from Lucas Stephenson that a STREAKED SHEARWATER was
heading by the bow!!! A mad rush to the front of the boat ensued and most
people on board got solid views of this mega-rarity as it passed north with
the Sooties. A lifer on board for many, and a state bird for many others.
We were all in shock and awe of what had just happened. This also
represented the first record of this species for San Francisco county.
There were a solid number of photos as this bird passed by. The photos of
this bird can be seen in the eBird checklist here:

Subject: [SFBirds] Seawatch Highlights
Some fun highlights from a few days of seawatching. Wednesday 8/5 ( https://ebird.org/checklist/S380253872 ) had some slow but steady elegant tern movement with the terns blasting by low. The local dolphin trio was a nice treat, I’ve seen them twice since.

The interesting thing I noted was only two vessels out on the water which was very different than the 47 vessels I saw on Thursday 8/6 ( https://ebird.org/checklist/S380987188 ) … the fishers clearly knew something I didn’t because there were much larger feeding frenzies, several hundred sooties and a show put on by a squad of three parasitic jaegers harassing a local osprey. Does anyone know how these fishing boats knew to be out…

On Saturday ( https://ebird.org/checklist/S381366617 ) 8/8, presumably the same local osprey attracted in another jaeger to come over land, not just over the beach but past the beach sand and was over chasing over the great highway. I went further north to the sutro baths to scout for a larger gathering the next day and I saw something so unbelievable to my midwestern brain but apparently not too wild for the west coast: a flock of what I believe were 19 jaegers seen close to shore. Video can be seen here ( https://ebird.org/checklist/S381620250 ).

Today ( https://ebird.org/checklist/S381727237 ) 8/9 was slow up north despite the sooty show down south but I convinced a nice group of beginning to intermediate birders to join me. On most days I had a friend or two out with me to experience the magic of seawatching. If you’re familiar with the sociological concept of a “third place”, I’m hoping seawatching can be that here as I convince more people to come out. It was huge to have more eyes, I would’ve missed the close by osprey chases because I was locked in on the scope.

I hope the local ospreys will continue enticing jaegers to come close to shore, I’ll be out either at the pollution plant seawatch or Sutro Tuesday-Sunday and hope these reports will inspire some of you to join! I’ve learned a lot from Paul and Brian and still need lots of help with alcids, still feeling pretty useless with non-PIGUs.

Happy Sunday night!

-Erick

Very high numbers (many thousands) of Shearwaters are swarming a few hundred yards off shore just south of Sloat (epicenter kind of aligns with Fort Funston). Great spectacle!

From: Dominik Mosur via groups.io <dominikmosur...>
Subject: [SFBirds] some late breeding notes + recent misc./ Corona Hill Bird walk returns 8/15
The breeding season is winding down but there's still some work to be done.
Several species continue to tend 2nd and in some cases 3rd broods
including: House Finches, White-crowned Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and
Hooded Orioles. Numerous Brown-headed cowbirds still dependent on
surrogate parents have been noted the past week even as a post breeding
flock of (300) was noted at McCoppin Square 8/4.

Several notable confirmations from the end of July - early August:

Ruddy Duck - females with (4) and (3) small precocial young were noted on
8/6 in both blocks containing Lake Merced. One group was visible from the
Concrete Bridge near the Water Treatment Facility, the other was west of
the Law Enforcement Shooting range.

White-throated Swifts - breeding was confirmed by Presidio biologists who
located a dead juvenile below a nest site in late July

American Kestrel - big thanks to Paul Saraceni, who's regular visits to
Pier 94 resulted in confirmation of American Kestrel. An adult has been
noted with at least one recently fledged juvenile through the first days of
August. Looking at the eBird distribution map this is the only confirmation
of breeding on the entire west side of San Francisco bay down through San
Mateo and Santa Clara county. Kestrel has really declined on the Peninsula
over the last several decades so it's somewhat surprising that the only
known breeding occurred in the City.

Acorn Woodpecker - Richard Bradus confirmed breeding at Lafayette Park with
the discovery of an occupied nest cavity on 7/20.

This now leaves only Green Heron and Western Flycatcher unconfirmed of the
likely breeders in SF.

a few migrants moving through the first week of August were:

Northern Harrier - Corona Hill 8/6

American Kestrel - Corona Hill 7/31

Western Kingbird - Laguna Honda Reservoir 8/2

Western Flycatcher - Corona Hill 8/1 and 8/4, Mount Sutro 8/2

W. Warbling Vireo - 2 E.Oak Woodland/GGP 8/4

Bullock's Oriole - Corona Hill 8/3 and 8/5 (maybe same bird lingering) and
E. Oak Woodland 8/4

Orange-crowned Warbler - Mount Sutro 8/2, E.Oak Woodland 8/4

Western Tanager - Vista Grande Canal 8/2, 6 Corona Hill 8/3, Hoover Middle
School 8/4

Black-headed Grosbeak - 8 Mount Sutro 8/2

Finally, Birding the Hill is back from summer hiatus. Join me for a hike
around Corona Hill as we look for birds. Beginning observers are encouraged
to join but all levels are welcome. There is a bit of elevation gain over
some rocky terrain so prepare accordingly. I have loaner binoculars as
well. Sign up here:

Happy birding,

Had it with Liam this morning. Similar to yesterday, it started the day off in the olive tree, just southeast of the Miguel Hidalgo statue and then dispersed, along with the chickadees presumably northbound. Not on it currently but seems to be loyal to the general area. Thank you to everyone’s patience and understanding for the late report yesterday!! Glad it stuck around 😅

I just wanted to inquire about whom I might contact re: two different
banded birds that I came across this last week at Ocean Beach. I have some
great images of them both. The bands are very clearly seen and obviously
different. They were spotted about 2 miles from each other. At any rate,
I'd be happy to share them with Stephanie Stragier, or anyone else that

Hi all,
I reported a few days ago on a color-banded Snowy Plover photographed at
Ocean Beach. Earlier this year, the bird was in Humboldt County. I reached
out to Stephanie Stragier, a Cal Poly Humboldt grad student doing research
up there and learned that this bird had two successful nesting attempts at
a site near the South Jetty, at the entrance to Humboldt Bay. She was last
seen there on July 25, five days before I encountered her at Ocean Beach.
Given shorebird flight speeds in the 25-35 mph range, it's plausible that
she might have made this flight in one night, or perhaps made a stopover in
between.
Stephanie will be presenting about her research at the Western Field
Ornithologists annual conference in Ashland, Oregon, September 17-20.

Hi all,

Erick Masias circulated photos of a bird he photographed earlier today which appears to be an Oak Titmouse. The bird was reportedly at Dolores Park, initially by the Miguel Hidalgo statue and later near 19th Street on the west side of the park. According to eBird data, there have apparently only been 2 previous records of OATI in the city over the past 10 years. Great find Erick!

Had a LARK SPARROW at the top of Corona Heights today. Flew down towards Dolores park at 0823. This is the earliest fall SF eBird record per Dom.

Alluding to Dom’s earlier message about post breeding dispersal, we also had a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and Dom had a handful of both BULLOCK’S and HOODED ORIOLES. I also saw a WESTERN TANAGER at Dolores. Stuff was definitely on the move overnight.

On a totally unrelated note, many of you know about the hawk nest on Mission High overlooking Dolores Park. I have some cute compilation ( https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZ2rspTNNDT/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== ) videos ( https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaObRJ-yeSN/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== ) of the fledglings growing up. As of yesterday a couple of them are still around the neighborhood.

As part of doing some bird ambassadorship ( https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZAp3xjhNGC/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== ) , I reached out to the high school to tell them about the hawks and invited some teachers to bring their classes out to view the nestlings through a scope. The principal was very excited about the hawks and offered to help facilitate installation of a nest cam next year. This would be a great opportunity for engaging the local community in birdjoy, so I’m soliciting help from the birding community at large to make this happen. If anyone has any expertise on setting up nest cams or roofing/scaling tall buildings safely, please reach out!! We have a lot of time before next nesting season and we need all the help we can get.

happy vibe shift season everyone!

Thank you to all who suggested contact information, and to Parker Kaye for
his rapid response to my query.
The bird was banded as a chick last year at Limantour Spit. It then
overwintered on Brooks Island, and was observed in Humboldt County this
year during the breeding season, before returning to the Bay Area.
I contacted someone who is working on Snowy Plovers in Humboldt, and will
let everyone know if I Iearn anything else about the bird.

At the Sutro Baths this morning, the first Parasitic Jaegers I’ve seen this
year came in from the south, harassed some Elegants, and quickly moved on.
Both were light morph adults. Also present were four continuing Wandering
Tattlers, a molting Red-necked Phalarope in the baths, and a minimum of 21
Pigeon Guillemots still near the nesting cliffs.

I then went up to Battery Chester, and instead of looking for migrant
passerines as planned, I was caught up in an amazing congregation of
hawks. At first there were four Red-shouldereds perched in the dead pines
having a conversation, and I assumed they were a family unit. But they
took flight one by one and were gradually joined by another four, along
with three different Red-taileds and a juvie Cooper’s, all soaring and
occasionally bickering in the airspace over the battery. One of the tails
was a dark morph adult whose molt created two bright white spots in the
outer primaries for a very unique look. They circled in differing
configurations for at least twenty minutes before slowly dispersing.

Thanks Lee.

Yeah, not sure where this one wandered in from either.

Dom,

Regarding dispersing Great Horned Owl, I saw all three hatch year owls in their natal territory in Buena Vista Park last night. Benal Hill's two hatch year Great Horned Owls were still there on July 14.
Therefore, I don't really know where the owl you observed on Corona Hill was coming from.

This is quite apparent for anyone visiting shorebirding locales like Ocean Beach and the Bayside but it's happening with landbirds as well.
Here are some observations from the last couple of weeks indicating that birds are already on the move:
Rufous/Allen's Hummingbirds - presumed Allen's Hummingbirds appear to have cleared out early this year. My last sighting of an adult male was 7/8. Numbers began to drop noticeably for Hatch-year birds as well by the end of the 2nd week of July. For those eBirding you may have noticed that Allen's is now flagged as "rare", this is because Rufous can be moving through by now as well and the immatures of these two species are extremely difficult to distinguish even with good photos. Best reported as Rufous/Allen's from here on.
Northern Harrier - a hatch year was flying over the St. Francis Wood neighborhood west of Mount Davidson in the afternoon on  7/24 which is pretty close to my earliest date for SF but another observer photographed two over El Polin Spring on 7/15
Great Horned Owl - a hatch year Great Horned owl dispersing from its natal territory was noted on Corona Hill 7/7. May have come from nearby Buena Vista Park where they nested. However according to owl breeding monitoring work by LH Chang we have approximately ~30 pairs in SF the past couple of years.
Belted Kingfisher - on at Pine Lake 7/10 was the first arrival post-breeding I've noted
Northern Flicker - 2 at the Clarendon School 7/12, and 3 around the Sutro Radio Tower /Twin Peaks7/17 could be evidence of breeding in this section of the City, with breeders on Mount Davidson and the Presidio still hanging out at those respective sites. I have been noting flickers in the block encompassing Mount Sutro OSP/Twin Peaks throughout spring and into early summer so it appears they may have nested in 3 blocks in 2026
Western Flycatcher - post breeding dispersants at sites where not known to nest in '26 were 2 on Mount Sutro 7/26 and one at Pine Lake 7/27
Hutton's Vireo - post breeding dispersants at sites where not known to nest in '26 were on Corona Hill 7/24 and Pine Lake Park 7/27
Western Warbling Vireo - an early migrant/dispersant was at Alemany Farm 7/16. three together at Pine Lake Park 7/27 were interesting. I had observed a pair here at the end of June, last seen 6/28. However there were no further observations until yesterday morning. Could they have nested successfully without being detected? Maybe. However I wasn't able to see any significant difference in plumage to indicate age and no behavior that would suggest it was a family group rather than early migrants on the move
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - a small push of these occurred over the weekend with singles on Corona Hill 7/25 and Mount Sutro 7/26. On the second day other observers also noted them on Mount Davidson and at McLaren Park
Northern House Wren - a tally of four on Mount Sutro 7/26. This is a typical count for this site by mid-summer when non-breeders begin to arrive.
RED CROSSBILL - a small push of Crossbills has been noted by multiple observers starting at the beginning of July from the Presidio, Mount Davidson and Lake Merced as well as two that briefly visited Corona Hill 7/17. This species has nested in SF in past years but was not confirmed in '26. These birds may be dispersing from nearby breeding territories in the Santa Cruz Mountains where they are expected within about 15-20 miles of SF (most notably around Skylawn Cemetery off HWY 92 x HWY 35)
Pine Siskin - first arrival on Corona Hill 7/28 joined Lesser Gold and House Finches on a residential feeder at the edge of the park
Wilson's Warbler - a worn AHY first arrival on Corona Hill showed up 7/18, was still present 7/23
Western Tanager - two early side migrants were at Buena Vista Park 7/21 as well as several other reports around the city in the past week
Black-headed Grosbeak - did not appear to nest in SF this year (only one record in recent memory from Mount Sutro in 2020) but multiple birds noted in recent days from Mount Davidson as well as one on Mount Sutro  7/26 are probably early migrants/dispersants f
Lazuli Bunting - first migrant/dispersant of the season was noted with a mixed flock of House Finches er al in West GGP near Bercut 7/28
Swinhoe's White-eyes - continue to be observed around the Haight-Ashbury where they nested this spring with two on Waller at Clayton 7/22 and 3 birds reported yesterday from a few blocks away. Seems like they are here to stay for now.

Subject: [SFBirds] recent misc./summer "vibe shift" in effect
Migration/post breeding dispersal is underway. People widely use the terms
"spring" and "fall" migration; but a colleague of mine suggested the term
"vibe shift" might be a bit less confusing considering Allen's
Hummingbirds begin arriving in SF by mid January and many species are
already migrating/dispersing post breeding by the end of June/early July.
This is quite apparent for anyone visiting shorebirding locales like Ocean
Beach and the Bayside but it's happening with landbirds as well.

Here are some observations from the last couple of weeks indicating that
birds are already on the move:

Rufous/Allen's Hummingbirds - presumed Allen's Hummingbirds appear to have
cleared out early this year. My last sighting of an adult male was 7/8.
Numbers began to drop noticeably for Hatch-year birds as well by the end of
the 2nd week of July. For those eBirding you may have noticed that Allen's
is now flagged as "rare", this is because Rufous can be moving through by
now as well and the immatures of these two species are extremely difficult
to distinguish even with good photos. Best reported as Rufous/Allen's from
here on.

Northern Harrier - a hatch year was flying over the St. Francis Wood
neighborhood west of Mount Davidson in the afternoon on 7/24 which is
pretty close to my earliest date for SF but another observer photographed
two over El Polin Spring on 7/15

Great Horned Owl - a hatch year Great Horned owl dispersing from its natal
territory was noted on Corona Hill 7/7. May have come from nearby Buena
Vista Park where they nested. However according to owl breeding monitoring
work by LH Chang we have approximately ~30 pairs in SF the past couple of
years.

Belted Kingfisher - on at Pine Lake 7/10 was the first arrival
post-breeding I've noted

Northern Flicker - 2 at the Clarendon School 7/12, and 3 around the Sutro
Radio Tower /Twin Peaks7/17 could be evidence of breeding in this section
of the City, with breeders on Mount Davidson and the Presidio still hanging
out at those respective sites. I have been noting flickers in the block
encompassing Mount Sutro OSP/Twin Peaks throughout spring and into early
summer so it appears they may have nested in 3 blocks in 2026

Western Flycatcher - post breeding dispersants at sites where not known to
nest in '26 were 2 on Mount Sutro 7/26 and one at Pine Lake 7/27

Hutton's Vireo - post breeding dispersants at sites where not known to nest
in '26 were on Corona Hill 7/24 and Pine Lake Park 7/27

Western Warbling Vireo - an early migrant/dispersant was at Alemany Farm
7/16. three together at Pine Lake Park 7/27 were interesting. I had
observed a pair here at the end of June, last seen 6/28. However there were
no further observations until yesterday morning. Could they have nested
successfully without being detected? Maybe. However I wasn't able to see
any significant difference in plumage to indicate age and no behavior that
would suggest it was a family group rather than early migrants on the move

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - a small push of these occurred over the weekend
with singles on Corona Hill 7/25 and Mount Sutro 7/26. On the second day
other observers also noted them on Mount Davidson and at McLaren Park

Northern House Wren - a tally of four on Mount Sutro 7/26. This is a
typical count for this site by mid-summer when non-breeders begin to arrive.

RED CROSSBILL - a small push of Crossbills has been noted by multiple
observers starting at the beginning of July from the Presidio, Mount
Davidson and Lake Merced as well as two that briefly visited Corona Hill
7/17. This species has nested in SF in past years but was not confirmed in
'26. These birds may be dispersing from nearby breeding territories in the
Santa Cruz Mountains where they are expected within about 15-20 miles of SF
(most notably around Skylawn Cemetery off HWY 92 x HWY 35)

Pine Siskin - first arrival on Corona Hill 7/28 joined Lesser Gold and
House Finches on a residential feeder at the edge of the park

Wilson's Warbler - a worn AHY first arrival on Corona Hill showed up 7/18,
was still present 7/23

Western Tanager - two early side migrants were at Buena Vista Park 7/21 as
well as several other reports around the city in the past week

Black-headed Grosbeak - did not appear to nest in SF this year (only one
record in recent memory from Mount Sutro in 2020) but multiple birds noted
in recent days from Mount Davidson as well as one on Mount Sutro 7/26 are
probably early migrants/dispersants f

Lazuli Bunting - first migrant/dispersant of the season was noted with a
mixed flock of House Finches er al in West GGP near Bercut 7/28

Swinhoe's White-eyes - continue to be observed around the Haight-Ashbury
where they nested this spring with two on Waller at Clayton 7/22 and 3
birds reported yesterday from a few blocks away. Seems like they are here
to stay for now.

Happy Summer Birding,
