We’ve just started to see a trickle of migrating warblers. Yesterday a Chestnut-sided and today a Blackburnian, both either immature of female. Although not as colorful as the spring warblers, it’s still fun to see them passing through.
Yesterday we had a pair of juvenile Red-shouldered Hawks fly low through the yard, land on the ground and perch in our red cedars and a large white pine tree. Certainly juveniles still learning to hunt. Not sure if they were after doves or squirrels. We have a pair nesting somewhere behind our property, but we’ve never seen any visit the yard like this.
About a month ago, we reported our 1st nesting Carolina Wrens, in a nest box right by the patio, about 10 yards from a nesting House Wren box. The Carolina Wrens have now abandoned that box, presumably due to the smaller, but aggressive House Wrens. I found 1 egg on the patio and 2 punctured eggs in the nest box. Oh well. Maybe next year.
