Autumn migrants are beginning to arrive, and some of our summer visitors are en route south. The Lake Washington water level is dropping, and the tops of the sand and gravel bars of the Cedar River delta are now exposed. There was a Pectoral Sandpiper there today at noon. In the water and on the stranded logs of the delta, there were a shoveler and three Green-winged Teal - haven't seen those species for quite some time. And on the logs there were Caspian Terns on their way south - 10 adults and one juvenile (it's also a long time since I've seen a juvie Caspian here). Fingers crossed that this August/September on the delta will be as good for migrant shorebirds as it was last year! It's time to start checking it out.
