My workplace has a small courtyard area with some trees and shrubs, and this past week, a couple of female downy woodpeckers have been hanging out there. They've been doing the usual woodpecker thing of moving along the trunks and large branches, but I've also seen them hanging upside down or sideways on the very small twigs at the ends of the branches. It's much more like the behavior of songbirds when they're eating berries or catkins. I know woodpeckers are primarily insectivores, but I wonder if they're going after some of the berries and seeds too? It's so funny to see them acting like goldfinches!
