This evening in Dover from the roof of the Washington Street Parking Garage, I had a respectable 60 Nighthawks, mostly in small groups and with no discernible direction of migration: many flying north, some south west, and a few even heading due east. This seems to be par for the course this time of year for Dover, as I had 63 on Wednesday and 39 last Thursday.
Other birds were moving through as well, including hundreds of Herring Gulls, some Ring and Great Black-backed Gulls, and the resident American Kestrel came and visited the downtown smoke stack. Of particular interest were a group of swallows that came through right at sunset migrating south west and mingled with a group of Chimney Swifts before departing. Photos lead me to suspect Purple Martins, but I am not sure they are identifiable.
