Not really 'unprecedented'. The first flying fish I saw this far north was on a Farallones Patrol trip to SE Farallon Island during the '83 El Niño. We saw a 'flock' of them within a mile or two of the southern Marin coast. They were my first here, but others on board had been seeing them for some months between San Francisco Bay and SEFI. David Ainley says they're up here during warming events, certainly during strong El Niños, though you might have to get into oceanic waters to see them.
