Subject: [Tweeters] Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) Eagle's Pride Golf Course (GC) monthly bird walk - 8-20-2026
Tweeters,

A fine weather day (60degF-75degF) with clear skies and no-to-light breeze for the 12 of us who birded the JBLM Eagle's Pride GC. We cut short the usual route - missing Hodge Lake - yet again due to a golf tournament that we didn't want to interfere with.

Standout observations:

DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - 1 - the first since 2022.

RED CROSSBILL - estimated 60 - were calling all along our route from start to finish.

RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH - estimated 41 - were also heard in most parts of the route.

BARN SWALLOW - about 50 - many juveniles - were seen in proximity to the driving range building where they have had quite a few nests this year.

BROWN CREEPER - 12 - a high number but likely many birds of the year contributed to the number.

PURPLE MARTIN - 9 - likely on migratory passage.

BUSHTIT - 40 - in two large flocks.

CALIFORNIA SCRUB-JAY - 6 - a high count for this site.

Finding only ONE Song Sparrow was disconcerting, considering how often we usually see this species.

Mammals included: rabbit; coyote; Douglas squirrel.

The JBLM Eagle's Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM from March-October and 9:00AM November to February. The starting point is the Driving Range building, Eagle's Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. (Turn left immediately after entering the parking lot to take the road leading to the driving range building.)

Upcoming walks include the following:

* September 17

* October 15

* November 19 (9am start)

Everyone is welcome!
