It was a "mistifying" morning for today's Thursday Birding Meetup at the uber foggy Freeville Marshes. We peered through the gauzy mist to find birds in this swampy wetland, relying on size, shape and behavior as colors were dulled and muted in the fog. Green herons and wood ducks stood out as well as kingbirds and a belted kingfisher. The pathway also featured some wooded edge habitat so we observed a smattering of expected birds like a downy woodpecker, cardinals, a catbird and blue jays with 18 species in all for the morning. We were startled to witness a hummingbird chasing a chickadee away from the hummingbird's preferred perch. A little high drama moment! The fog lifted a bit and we were treated to very nice looks at two juvenile green herons hanging out up in some branches. And, along the way, the nineteen of us were charmed by bejeweled spider webs, the late summer blooms and some hints of fall in turning leaves and starlings flocking up. Afterward, we breakfasted at Kendall, again. Who knew how many birds one can find in the fog? Want to join us next week? Thursday August 27 will find us at Stewart Park where we'll search for migrating warblers and other songbirds in Renwick Woods. Meet us at 7:00 am in the eastern parking lot, turning right into the park when you first enter. All birders are warmly welcome to join us. Bird before work or other activities and leave as you need to--or, if your time allows, gather with us for breakfast and conversation afterward.
