Date: 10/13/26 5:35 am From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Lake Henshaw Monday apparent Wedge-rumped |
As it turns out, Steve Lima was at Lake Henshaw again yesterday morning, the 12th, as a follow-up to his visit on the 11th, post-Rachel. He did a post of what he saw yesterday, including Royal Terns And a Black storm petrel., but then when looking through his photos in the evening he had taken of the Black storm petrel, which is exceptional Inland, he noticed that there was a white rumped bird in two photos and indeed it looks like an excellent candidate for Wedge rumped Storm petrel. It's not a great image, In fact, it's rather a small spec, but it looks reasonable. Presumably by now everything is gone, but if somebody wants to dash up there this morning and see if anything remains, please do and report promptly any positive news. This requires scoping from the side of the road a long way away toward the opposite side of the lake.

Date: 10/12/26 2:30 pm From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Tropical Storm RACHEL San Diego County, October 11-12: (partial) summary |
Here's a summary (undoubtedly a partial summary) of the more interesting avian events in San Diego County associated with Tropical Storm RACHEL, which came ashore centered a bit south of Ensenada during the middle of the night, October 10/11, crossed over the border right around Jacumba soon thereafter, and continued to speed off to the NNE. Birders out and about on the 11th, with just a very few looking on the 12th, produced the following notables in San Diego County. Thanks to all the observers who scoured coastal and inland sites. Some of these reports are tentative.
RAREST FINDS?My votes for the least-expected discoveries were Â
ROYAL TERN had only been seen inland in the county a couple times previously, and only as far inland as Lake Murray and Lower Otay Lake; thus, singles at Lake Morena and El Capitan Reservoir on the 11th and a hot-off-the-presses report of two at Lake Henshaw on the 12th were exceptional
WESTERN GULL has only been found in the far interior part of the county (east of the Escondido and Lakeside regions) two or three times previously (e.g., single birds at Lake Henshaw and Lake Morena), so a flock of 6 (with a Sabine's) flying east to west past Jacumba on the 11th was exceptional
LEAST STORM-PETREL seems like the bridesmaid rather than the bride because of the slug of previous Leasts found inland following Tropical Storm Hillary in late August 2023, but this time around one was at Lower Otay Lake on the 11th and I've just heard about potentially several on Lake Henshaw on the 12th
It seemed to be overall a good storm for terns, Sabine's Gulls, and phalaropes:
ARCTIC TERN reports were many on the 11th, and included inland birds at Lake Morena (two), El Capitan Reservoir (two?), and Sweetwater Reservoir, and several seen from shore along the coast at La Jolla on the 11th and 12th; inland multiple COMMON TERNS were at several sites (e.g., Sweetwater, El Capitan, Lake Henshaw) and coastal numbers were certainly above average; and duos of getting-late BLACK TERNS were at both Lake Morena and Sweetwater Reservoir
RED PHALAROPES were inland at Lake Morena, Lake Cuyamaca, and Borrego Springs, all on the 11th; and flocks of inland RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at multiple sites were unusual for this getting-late date (like the Black Terns)--perhaps birds pushed back north by the storm rather than over-flying southbound birds that got knocked down??
SABINE'S GULLS were well represented on the 11th both inland and coastally, with inland reports from Lake Henshaw (up to six, through the 12th), Jacumba, and Lake Murray, and at multiple onshore and from-shore coastal sites on the 11th
HEERMANN'S GULLS inland at Lake Murray on the 11th and at Lake Henshaw on the 12th
OTHER:
A SANDERLING at Lower Otay Lake on the 11th is one of the first-ever truly inland records in the county, and exactly how the bird got there (via what mechanism/direction)Â is open to discussion!
Five COMMON LOONS at Sweetwater Reservoir on the 11th were likely southbound overland migrants knocked down by the storm, the same day there was a substantial flight along the coast
SEAWATCHING at La Jolla, Torrey Pines, and Leucadia were productive, with headliners including reports of a record-early ANCIENT MURRELET, a BULLER'S SHEARWATER, two white-rumped storm-petrels (possibly Leach's types), a couple Least Storm-Petrels, a couple murrelet sp., and a good from-shore count of 16 Pink-footed Shearwaters. Some other goodies such as Red-footed Booby, a number of southbound Common Murres, Black Storm-Petrel, an excellent flight of Common Loons, and a reasonable southbound flight of Parasitic Jaegers could easily have occurred even without the storm.
Presumably a few more records of note will be forthcoming.
Paul Lehman, San Diego

I decided to make a Day 2 visit to Lake Henshaw this morning, and surprisingly, it had even more odd birds than it did yesterday (the morning following the tropical storm). Nothing super rare, but unusual nonetheless. Today's birds included a few dark storm-petrels (one black and possible least), large terns (at least two ROYTs), and a Heerman's Gull. Several Sabine's Gulls are still present. Perhaps most of these species will be present for a few days.
As is often the case at Lake Henshaw, most birds were on the distant (eastern) side of the lake, which makes a scope essential. You can pay the $10 fee (at the Lake Henshaw resort store) and get down to the boat ramp, but when the air is cold, viewing is often more distorted at lake level than up on the Highway 76 overlooks. Either way, you will need a scope.

they are calling constantly and pretty conspicuous.
In general, the fruiting fig trees have been the center of activity throughout the park, and itâs well worth finding one to sit under for a while

Just a note to those who still may look for the El Camino Cemetery Palm Warbler, though it was seen again today (Oct 10) in or near the posted spot, I also saw it with with its accompanying small Yellow-rump flock around 1:30 pm, in the upper level of the cemetery, in the Valor Ridge section where the two huge guns are and American Flag pole. So the flock does range a bit. Â

Date: 10/9/26 2:18 pm From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Fort Rosecrans Cemetery access issues--PLEASE READ |
For many years now, we have been under an "understood" agreement with Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery that birders are permitted on site before 8AM and after 5PM. Sometimes a few folks stay just a little later or arrive a little early, and on rare occasion we have gotten clearance to stand in one corner before or after hours because a specific very rare bird was present. BUT, a small number of birders have sometimes continued to "blatantly" walk around the cemetery during restricted hours, with binoculars and large camera in hand, which is clearly inappropriate. BUT, just in the past several days, a couple new, potentially more restrictive measures have been relayed to birders on site. Someone working in the office told folks that NO photography is permitted, although that has never been an issues in the past. Clearly, birders should never be seen taking photos anywhere near a ceremony or next to people visiting a grave site. But otherwise, we have never had a problem. And then earlier today, one of the grounds keepers approached several birders and told them they could not walk around on the grass and near the headstones, but had to stay on the paved roads! Obviously, if this became a rule that would ruin much of the birding at the cemetery.
As a result, here are a couple suggestions:
1)Â Probably best to keep a lower profile there the rest of the fall season, so if you aren't truly desperate to bird there and are just looking for a place to visit for some birding, please consider going somewhere else.
2) Under NO circumstances bring up visitation with the authorities, as we should hope that the status quo remains, and it is absolutely not worth stirring the pot.

Hi all-
I had a nice walk around the central area of Balboa Park this morning - the weather shift made it a bit more pleasant out and seems to have brought around a bunch of new arrivals. Most interesting were a Yellow-green Vireo and a Tropical Kingbird, both in the Zoro garden. The Kingbird was mostly perched high up in a fig, and the Vireo spent the whole ~10 minutes I watched it in the one flowering coral tree with two Western Tanagers here: 32.7312, -117.1480. Another thing that has seemed interesting is that the Willow Flycatcher I first had in the big fig tree in front of the museum is still there, largely sticking to the same part of the tree. I think of them as a bird that moves pretty quickly on migration, so it will be interesting to see how long it sticks around (to me).

Greetings,
In this first week of October, we finished bar charts for 5 hotspots!
At one of those, Delta Beach--south overlook, John Bruin captured a stunning photo of an American Barn Owl in dawn lighting!
Meanwhile, I decided to hike all the way to the top of Cuyamaca Peak. A first for me, having previously gotten close but turning back shortly before the actual peak - it's a difficult hike due to the ~1500ft elevation change. I'm glad I managed to finish the hike this time, as, right near the top, I encountered about ten Clark's Nutcrackers, and also a potential Plumbeous Vireo (left as a slash). A bit before that, I watched a Merlin tenaciously mobbing a Common Raven in flight for several minutes! Fox Sparrows continue to be reliable along Lookout Rd near the campgrounds, and I noted one near the peak as well. This also marks the first time I've encountered more than one Hammond's Flycatcher in the same place, and what is (for me, at least) a remarkably high number of Ruby-crowned Kinglets (26), with a cluster of ~10 in one place and several other smaller clusters. The region near the peak was particularly active in general and is where I recorded most of the warblers on my list.
In the next bar chart week, starting Thursday, we have an opportunity to finish two more (noted at the top of the list below).
If you're just joining us, please see this message for an explanation of these weekly hotspot lists: https://groups.io/g/SanDiegoRegionBirding/topic/hotspots_for_ebird_bar_charts/119585667

A wayward Acorn Woodpecker was in the southwest corner, now about the 3rd or 4th Acorn seen out here this fall. A Hammond's flycatcher was in the Southeast corner and a Vermilion flycatcher was in the Northeast corner.
Matt's brief Evening Grosbeak is the first for the coast this fall, but probably not the last! Following in the footsteps now already of several coastal Cassins Finches.

The juvenile Sabines Gull that Matt has been seeing for a number of days now in the interior Salt Works is currently (9:20 AM, Saturday) sitting on one of the salt-mud Islands in the middle of pond 23 at the end of 10th Street, so certainly visible nicely with a scope. Also one continuing Lesser Yellowlegs on Stint Island.
Earlier in the morning, I had the now returning for at least 4 years adult male American Redstart at Seaport Village, as in recent years likes the little trees right around the artificial pond next to the Malibu Farms restaurant. Quite photogenic. And the returning also for about four or so years now spiffy male hybrid Hermit X Townsend's Warbler continues at Spreckels Park in Coronado, usually in the northern half of the park.

Date: 10/3/26 5:07 am From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] another mountain ID issue: empids |
Another ID problem during the fall in the mountains for many years has been Western vs. Hammond's Flycatcher. Usually, the problem is the bird is a Hammond's that folks misidentify as a Western. This typically occurs after the first week of Oct through about mid-Nov, when Hammond's actually outnumbers Western in the mountains and is, in fact, THE most likely empid there at that time. The problem arises because Hammond's in fall are in fresh plumage (unlike the other empids) and most are heavily washed with yellowish below. BUT, during the past two weeks, with all the heavy birder visitation in the mountains, the opposite problem has been occurring, with several reports (with photos) of "Hammond's" that were, in fact, Westerns. (Thanks to Ryan Terrill for pointing some of these out.)
Before reporting either of these species from the mountains during the remainder of this fall, please study how to tell these two species apart. One place to start is: https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/The-Skimmer-Volume-53-Number-5-May-2026-FEATURE-Empids.pdfBut be aware that many of these fresh, fall Hammond's are even yellower below than most photos in this article, for example.

We are having a gathering to remember and honor our friend and mentor Guy McCaskie at 10AM on Saturday, November 14th, in San Diego at the Bird & Butterfly Garden (formerly Myer's Ranch) in the Tijuana River Valley, where Guy began his rare-bird exploration back in the 1960s. All are invited. This will be an INFORMAL get-together where we hope that many of you will briefly recount your favorite memories with, or about, Guy: what he meant to you, a shared event, a funny story or two. We will start with thoughts from several people very close to Guy, and then we'll open up the remembrances to everyone. Paul will be the informal emcee. No RSVPs needed. There is no set time limit for this gathering. As long as people have something to say....    For those of you who cannot attend, you are invited to send Paul any thoughts and stories you would like to share, and he will make sure they are read at the event.  The Bird & Butterfly Garden is located in the Tijuana River Valley on the west side of Hollister Street, south of Tocayo Avenue (exit on I-5), and just a little south of Sunset Avenue, but north of Monument Road. 32.5539251, -117.0848769 . On maps it is likely labeled as "Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Bird & Butterfly Garden." Once the parking lot fills, there are scattered pullouts along Hollister Street, but the best additional parking is along Hollister immediately to the north, bordering the outside of the TRV Community Gardens vegetable plots. (Do not park inside the Gardens.) To reduce the number of cars and the potential for parking difficulties, car pooling is definitely encouraged.

Did a quick lap around Torrey Hills Park yesterday around 4:00pm. Saw 3 pipits in the grass on the baseball fields ( 32°55'06.43"N 117°13'21.16"W) and didnât think much of them until I was looking at the pictures today and noticed the bold, extensive streaking across the breast and sides as well as streaking on the crown. It also had a well-defined pale supercilium. I reached out to Paul L. who agreed that these features point to red-throated rather than American. Could be worth checking out.

With all the many folks visiting the Laguna Mountains recently to enjoy the irruptive montane species show, several repeated ID problems have arisen. The chief two involve Cassin's Finch and Brewer's Sparrow. Cassin's Finches are clearly present currently--in fact, record early--in small to perhaps locally moderate numbers. BUT, a fair number of folks are reporting some on the basis of hearing only and MERLIN tells them they are Cassin's Finches. The problem is that MERLIN regularly struggles to ID Cassin's vs. Purple (including going back and forth on the same bird) and incorrectly identifies some Purples as Cassin's. Thus, please do not ID and submit ANY Cassin's Finches based only on a MERLIN ID that you did not independently verify.
The second species causing problems lately is Brewer's Sparrow. There have been lots of Chipping Sparrows present in the Mile 19/Water of the Woods area, and with them one or two Brewer's. But quite a few eBird reports of Brewer's with photos show young Chippings. So, please be careful.
Lastly, another plea for folks reporting record or near-record numbers of some of these irruptive species to report these largest numbers ONLY if carefully counted as best as can be done, and not if only a gross estimate, often made after the fact.

Greetings,
Two of the checklists from last week's hotspots yielded multiple rarities!
At San Luis Rey Mission, a Plumbeous Vireo and Red-breasted Nuthatch were
documented among the 47 species list by Sally Veach and Patricia Langen.
The other, in San Bernardo Valley, a 2 hour, 1 mile list by Steven Lima,
included a Common Ground Dove, two Northern Red Bishops (only the second
report in the county this year!), and a Brewer's Sparrow, as well as an
unexpected for the area White-breasted Nuthatch.
Next week, thanks to our diligent efforts up to this point, five hotspots
just need this one week to be complete! Four are right along the coast from
La Jolla to TRV, and one is way out near Julian. Many others are also close
to completion, including a Cuyamaca hotspot, that would be good to check on
anyway to document the current montane irruption.
If you're just joining us, please see this message for an explanation of
these weekly hotspot lists:

Date: 9/29/26 10:43 pm From: David Trissel via groups.io <dtrissel...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Good Day in the Lagunas (Evening Grosbeak, Zone-tailed, Townsend's Solitaire, Crossbill, Clark's, Pinyon, Cassin's Finch) |
Geoff Veith and I spent five hours in the Lagunas today, hiking in from the 19-mile pullout at 8:00am and spending most of the time at the "Water of the Woods" location, which is also called Los Rosales Lake on the map. It was VERY birdy.
Although the continuing CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS are now ubiquitous out there, it was still fun seeing them throughout the day. But, the PINYON JAYS are few and far between, and we only heard two the entire morning. If you are hoping for Pinyon Jays, you may want to adjust your expectations (or try farther north at the top of the Big Laguna meadow).
A continuing ZONE-TAILED HAWK made an appearance and was harassed by ravens. Note there are several Red-tailed Hawks in the area and one is a nice dark-morph that can be confused for the Zone-tailed.
At least one TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was around, with one in the pines right above the "berry bush" at the lake where the grosbeaks have been seen very sporadically over the last week. Another was spotted by others farther east near the south end of Big Laguna Lake.
We had a flock of RED CROSSBILLS fly directly over us at the "berry bush", calling away. I was able to ID two males and a female. There may be a larger flock up there.
There are plenty of CASSIN'S FINCHES in that same area. We were able to get good views of both males and females. Lots of Lawrence's Goldfinches as well, along with our FOS American Pipits in the mud on the edge of the lake. There is a Fox Sparrow along the edge of the lake there as well.
Last, but not least ... At noon we had given up all hope of seeing the EVENING GROSBEAKS that we had heard a couple of times earlier in the day, high up in the pines at the lake edge. Just as we were starting back towards the trailhead, we spotted a female grosbeak in a small pine at eye level. This pine hangs over the edge of the lake, and there were additional grosbeaks, including a couple males, down on the ground at the edge of the lake. We then noticed that the grosbeak in the pine was accompanied by a few more grosbeaks. In total, we think we had at least 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS in a single flock. I would not be surprised if there were 12 or more. They moved together, first to the ground, then back up into the small pine, and then all went high up in a large pine on the west side of the trail. In our haste to get the alerts out, and still hearing them calling to each other, we looked away for a moment, and they moved out of sight. We think they continued west, perhaps down the slope and roughly towards the "berry bush" area.
For those hoping to chase, the coordinates for the small pine are:
32.8746953, -116.4668493
Details in our eBird checklist here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S397572237
Good birding!
Sincerely,
David Trissel San Diego, CA

Good afternoon,
Given the increase in Evening Grosbeak reports, I want to point out that Evening Grosbeak calls can be recorded and assigned to type, similar to Red Crossbills. eBird provided an article on this some time ago, forgive me if there is something more recent. The article is available at https://ebird.org/news/evening-grosbeak-call-types-of-north-america
Given the breadth of the ongoing irruption, southern California data points on Evening Grosbeaks and Red Crossbills (though it is not clear to me that there is an ongoing Red Crossbill dispersion that is following what we are seeing for Pinyon Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers, Red-breasted Nuthatches, and Evening Grosbeaks) that provide insight into the individuals' geographic origins may build an interesting story from this ongoing phenomenon.

Hi,
Not considered rare at this time of year, but seems to be the first
report for Villa La Jolla Park for this fall. I had a Red-naped
Sapsucker high on the trunk of one of the pines in the northeast section
of the park this afternoon. Since it won't show up in eBird rarity
alerts and there are a lot of newer birders in the county, thought I'd
post.

Dave and Nancy re-found the vireo found earlier by Luca.
It was in this Chinese Elm:
(32.6833443, -117.2434491)
It then flew to the three nearby Chinese Elms to the west and then west again across the cemetery circular drive in to the ficus. The bird seems to be working a circuit in and around the elms, ficus and Eucs.
Reminder that the cemetery prohibits birding between 8:00-4:00
Check out Nancyâs list for Margaretâs great photo.

Landlubber birders may be interested to know that a young (2nd year?) Masked/Nazca Booby first seen roosting at the tip of the south jetty at the mouth of Mission Bay on 12 Sep was still present there yesterday, 26 Sep. It was present yesterday at 7:15AM as we departed on our pelagic trip, but was not present on our return in the late afternoon--no doubt due to all the human fisherman disturbance. This bird should be quite visible with a scope from Ocean Beach Dog Beach. Because of the strong potential for human disturbance during the day, early morning would seemingly be best. We thought the bird still unidentifiable as to Masked or Nazca, but will be further studying the myriad of photos of it taken from the boat.

The San Diego pelagic trip on Saturday, September 26, aboard "Legacy" out of Seaforth Landing and sponsored by Buena Vista Audubon Society was highlighted by boobies and storm-petrels. A cooperative Red-footed Booby circled the boat time and time again over a distance of over four miles some 5-1/4 to 9-3/4 miles off Mission Bay and Point Loma, a young Masked/Nazca booby was roosting at the end of the Mission Bay jetty as we departed in the morning, and a Cocos Booby was off Point Loma. A good total of 240 Least Storm-Petrels (scattered, but mostly at the 30-Mile Bank, but also as close as barely over a mile or two from shore), plus moderate numbers of Leach's (18+). Somewhat surprising were the Great Blue Heron over the San Diego Trough and the Merlin out at "The Corner," some 33-1/3 miles offshore.

We checked out a couple of parks in Mira Mesa this morning.
Lopez Ridge Park was fairly quiet with Red-breasted Nuthatch being the only bird of note.
Christa McAuliffe Park/Winterwood Lane Park was active with a Virginia's Warbler high in the eucalyptus trees near the small entrance bridge on the east side. A female-type American Redstart was along the fence line at the northern border of the park in a mix of Brazilian Pepper and Bougainvillea. Red-breasted Nuthatch was also present here.

A Blackpoll Warbler that I found yesterday continued today in the same tree (32.6859771, -117.2432174). This morning, it was also joined by a Magnolia Warbler! Maybe they will linger a little longer.
I also found an American Redstart in the wide Eucalyptus here (32.6880508, -117.2442035).
With other regular migrants plus a Common Yellowthroat, I had 10 species of warblers in total.
There were two Tropical Kingbirds along the west side this morning, maybe a new addition to the continuing bird that has been in the SE, or maybe two new individuals.

Just had a Clark's Nutcracker at Paso Picacho in the Cuyamacas. Initially we heard it from the small trail that goes to the amphitheater. It flew south, possibly 2 birds. We relocated one between the front entrance and maintenance facilities to the south. We watched it from the Azalea Glen/Paso Picacho trailhead and along the road to the campground. It was briefly harassed by Acorn Woodpeckers and a Steller's Jay.

Date: 9/20/26 5:30 am From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] the Pinyon Jay/Nutcracker invasion ; and recent Semi Sandpiper reports |
First off, there have been a couple recent reports of Semipalmated Sandpiper(s) at Lower Otay Lake which have generated some further interest by others in looking for them. Be aware that this species is extremely rare after about Sep 5--with almost all fall records between the last week of July and the first week of Sep. Anything after that is exceptional and needs to be photographically documented. These recent reports have no photos, come from two different parts of the lake, and in one case has an incorrect age for what might occur. A truism is that the first step in properly identifying Semi's in the fall is to be able to properly AGE them. Anyway, be aware that EXTREME caution is warranted.
As just about everyone knows, we are clearly in the midst of a major irruptive movement of Pinyon Jays and Clark's Nutcrackers. This is a widespread event also in other parts of California and in the Great Basin/Southwest (a likely source region). Most of the activity in San Diego County has been centered in the Big Laguna Meadow area in the Laguna Mountains, between about Pine Valley Road in the north and Water of the Woods at the south. But that's where virtually all of the birders are going!!!! Be aware that there has also been a report of a flock of nutcrackers near Cuyamaca Peak and just yesterday there was a small flock of Pinyon Jays seen at Lake Cuyamaca. So......FURTHER EXPLORATION IS WARRANTED! Also, observers can help better document this event by--as best as can be done with roving, shifting flocks--carefully counting numbers of these species they see, rather than just making after-the-fact estimates.
All of the observer visitation to this part of the Laguna Mountains since the end of August has resulted in a "Patagonia Picnic Table Effect" in which one rare bird begets more birder visitation which generates another rare bird, which generates yet more visitation, which results in yet more..... In addition to the two celebrity corvids, birders have discovered a host of record early arrivals, including record-early Williamson's Sapsuckers, record or near-record Cassin's Finch and Pine Siskin, and several others. Two Red Crossbills were photo'd.
It will be interesting to see what other montane species go on the move this fall and winter. Clearly Red-breasted Nuthatches are. We had a Mountain Chickadee at Jacumba a few days ago. And be aware that a few Evening Grosbeaks have now turned up farther north in Southern California.
Paul Lehman, San Diego

Laban Wenger just a short while ago sent me several photos of a Louisiana Waterthrush that he found at the Borrego Springs settling ponds. Now also seen and photographed by Bob Theriault. It's on the south pond, the only pond with water. Certainly would be easier to see there than the darn sneaky bird at Solana Beach!Â
In other news, today, I had two common terns at the East end of Lower Otay Lake, where very rare Inland in the county. There was common tern and Bairds Sandpiper on pond 22 at the Salt Works this morning. Yesterday there was a Mountain Chickadee at Jacumba, which is east of normal, and which may portend a movement of chickadees perhaps this season upcoming into the lowlands.Â

When I left a while after Nancy it had moved up onto the front edge of the first ridge of dunes. There are two white signs as far as I remember. I think they are both sesitive habitat signs. It was north of the northern sign a little ways. It moved around quite a bit this morning. When I first saw it (others were already on it) when I got there after 9:00 a.m., it was in between the two dune ridges. It can be very well camouflaged, especially if facing away. It moves a lot differently than the other Plovers. Very slow and deliberate most of the time. Most of the time it was by itself, as Robert mentioned..

The sand-plover continues Saturday morning north of Camp Surf in the back dunes on Navy property. It was in this area 32.594888,-117.132010. There are many Snowy Plover in this area so please be cautious and do not go onto Navy property above the mean high tide. That line is well below the dunes and often below the dry sand line.

There is an adult male American Redstart at SDSU, around the turtle pond (in the same general area the Black-throated Blue hung out last winter). From the grassy lawn uphill of the pond, we first saw the bird in trees on the south side (near the tree with little oranges on it), and it later foraged low in the big sycamore next to the pond.

bad photos will be put on the eBird checklist but theyâre clearly show field marks.

Look north up towards the dunes thereâs a gray trash can thatâs in the background come back down towards the beach and itâs sitting with a snowy and a semi plovers.
I left at 12:56.
Thank you, Matt for finding it and Bridget for refining it!

I observed a basic-plumaged Black Tern at 9:45 this morning near the mouth of the San Luis ReyRiver in Oceanside.  The bird was originally noted foraging over the marshy area between N. Pacific Street and the train trestle.  I saw it a short period later from a berm on the southeast side of the free parking lot.  This is upstream and northeast of my first sighting.
Three Common Terns foraged over the Oceanside Harbor near the bait barge, quite possibly the trio noted by "Anonymous birder" at Camp Pendleton on the 14th. Â

Wednesday morning the Blackpoll warbler that Nick Thorpe found at Robb field continues as of 10:45 a.m. In the dense four ficus trees at the southwest corner of the tennis courts. When we had the bird it was staying quite high in the trees. So difficult to see at times with all the layers of vegetation and was mostly in the easternmost one or two trees. At around 8:45 a.m. I had a Bobolink at the TRV Community Gardens in the northwest quadrant primarily circling around calling giving the classic "ink" call but it got swallowed up by a mass of of flushing House finches and Red-winged Blackbirds and it may have left the scene. At the east end of Lower Otay Lake, there is still a Pectoral Sandpiper and a good number of shorebirds overall, and moderate numbers of swallows including one Bank Swallow.

Just so people are aware, now that the tide is going out, the juvenile Siberian Sand-Plover (it does appear to be that age and species) was refound right around the peak of the high tide inside the Saltworks. Mildly better digiscopes were obtained before a raptor flushed it even more quickly than yesterday. There are a minimum of four Peregrines wreaking fear and havoc inside Salt today.

The red phalarope continues in the quickly drying pond at the east end of Siempre Viva Road at La Media in Otay Mesa. The bird can be seen in the north section of the pond from the outside of the fence, but the gate is unlocked for the adventurous. A good look without the risk of seasickness!

Date: 9/15/26 9:19 am From: <lehman.paul...> via groups.io <lehman.paul...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Black Swifts |
Black Swift is a strictly casual migrant in Fall with far fewer records at this season than there even are in spring when it's more reliable under certain weather conditions. However, following one bird being photographed at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery on Point Loma on the 13th, I just had three birds circling around in the Tijuana River Valley over the big fallow field along the north side of Sunset between Hollister and the dead end at the east end of Sunset. Minutes later they drifted off in the general East Northeast direction. Presumably once this solid marine layer starts breaking up, which it seems to be starting to do now, any swifts would be much more difficult to find. Not only was it fully overcast this morning, but we had what's known as a Catalina Eddy forming right offshore which results in a pretty good southerly breeze as well, all of which probably help to keep the birds down relatively low. The same forecast exists for tomorrow morning, so if folks would like to do a Hail Mary, you might try the first 2 hours of light tomorrow morning, as long as it is indeed solid overcast, at places like Point Loma or Mount Soledad or maybe back here in the TRV.....
In the low-hanging fruit category, there's a young male Vermilion Flycatcher also here along Sunset.

This morning a flock of about 10 Clarkâs Nutcrackers passed over my location on Big Laguna Trail as I was headed back to the Penny Pines trailhead. They were flying in a generally SSE direction from here: (32.9027125, -116.4627600). They did not stop nor vocalize in the time they were visible so I am trying to relocate them now.
The large flock of Pinyon Jays continues at the north end of the meadow.

Hi all,
There's also a Chestnut-sided Warbler at Buddy Todd Park in Oceanside. Last seen around here: 33.2097,-117.3473. It was associated with a mixed flock with warblers, vireos, and intermittent tanagers and white-eyes. Pretty birdy overall this morning. The female Downy x Nuttall's hybrid found in June continues as well.
Happy birding, -Ted Keyel Oceanside

The Chestnut-sided Warbler found yesterday in La Jolla Colony Park continues Sunday morning just after 8:00 a.m. near the extreme southern end of the park. Along the paved path just before you leave the park at the South end there is a large sycamore tree, the only one at the south end. And it kept coming back to that tree and then disappearing in various other directions, often but not always loosely associated with a Townsends Warbler. It's now MIA for 15 minutes, so obviously it can go off elsewhere, I think into the surrounding housing.
