I decided to drive from Kirksville and spend parts of 2 days - Thursday from 3-6pm and Friday 8-10:30am - hoping to see and photograph the reported Swallow-tailed Kite at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area.
On Thursday, I didnât see any Swallow-tailed Kites and, with the warm temperatures, the approx 6 Mississippi Kites were up pretty high. But there was a flyby of 2 Air Force jets at very low altitude.
This morning on Friday, it was originally foggy, but then cleared into a sunny blue sky, with some clouds.
There were 6-8 Mississippi Kites perched in the dead trees just east of the round parking area off the intersections of pools 10, 11, 14 ands 15. They would occasionally fly out, but then fly back to their perch. I think they were either testing for thermals or catching an insect. As the fog cleared and things started warming, they took off, circling to gain altitude and quickly soared up high.
Around 9am, I spotted 2 Swallow-tailed Kites flying just above the trees towards the south. Then one soared towards me and circled right overhead at fairly low altitude, again gaining altitude before flyng away toward the Missouri River. I didnât see it after that and left around 10:30am. Pretty cool to get such close looks with good light for photos - pretty fortunate!

Thanks everyone that reached out directly and on the list serve with feedback. Everyone had some great suggestinos and while most of it just solidified my current plans, I did pick up a new spot to check out for condors and bumped up another location from a maybe to top contender. I also have some great ideas for the next trip! LOL. So many great places to check out and some awesome birds! This time next week, I'll be waist deep in Arizona birds and the National Park system. (Insert giddy squeals and crazy dance moves!!)
Thanks guys!

Just north of St. Louis, two of the greatest rivers on the continent come together. The land where they meet is an ecosystem of national significance, and for generations people have poured themselves into caring for it: landowners, farmers, duck club members, birdwatchers, anglers, volunteers, and conservation partners of every kind.
Ameren Missouri is now evaluating routes for new high-voltage transmission lines as part of its Eastern Missouri Grid Transformation Project. Some of the routes under consideration would open new corridors through the heart of the Confluence east of Highway 79.
Missouri needs a strong, modern electric grid. This coalition agrees, and our request is a reasonable one: route the new lines along existing corridors rather than through a landscape that public agencies, private stewards, and everyday people have spent decades restoring and protecting for future generations.

To make that case, a coalition has prepared a full Environmental Assessment and a Declaration for Responsible Routing. Ameren's project team has confirmed that every submission is reviewed and logged. Your name, added today, becomes part of the official record before a route is chosen.

I relocated the immature Laughing Gull first reported yesterday from Red
Star Access in Cape Girardeau Co. The bird was with a Ring-billed Gull on a
sandbar opposite Cape Rock Park, over a mile upstream.
It may have been the light, but the bird I saw looked paler than the one in
the photo accompanying yesterday’s report. There might possibly be two.
Crummy photos will be on eBird shortly.

I got the opportunity to go to the Grand Canyon *specifically* to go birding back in May this year. We stayed in Tusayan and I walked through the Kaibab National Forest one afternoon (not to the Canyon), hiked the 6 miles (!) from Tusayan to the Canyon one morning, and then rode the shuttle in from Tusayan one morning. If you decide to hike in from Tusayan, do not underestimate the 6 mile distance from the trailhead to the Village. I started at 7:30 am and did not reach the Grand Canyon Village proper until almost noon. That was a pretty brutal trek, as I still hiked more throughout the park. I even started down the Bright Angel Trail, although I stopped at the 1.5-mile Resthouse and turned back to meet my wife back at the top. Unfortunately, I did not see Condors, although they were seen the week before we got down there *and* the week after I left.
Granted, this was in May...
The Tusayan Greenway Trail (the hike in from Tusayan to the GC National Park) got me several lifers, including Cassin's Kingbird, Bullock's Oriole, Grace's Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, and Bushtit, as well as lots of Pygmy Nuthatch and a really good look at a Hepatic Tanager.
I got no lifers at the Canyon this time, but I got really good looks at Lucy's Warbler and Virginia's Warbler on the Bright Angel Trail, as well as Rock Wren, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Broad-tailed Hummingbird. There were also Violet-Green Swallow, Juniper Titmice, Mountain Chickadee, and Woodhouse's Scrub Jay all over the Rim trails. There were also several Turkey Vultures ... so be cautious of declaring Condors in flight unless you can confirm size and/or wing patterns.
On this trip, I also happened to go down to Phoenix to visit friends. While we were down there, she had Gila Woodpecker, several species of hummingbirds, White-winged doves, and Curve-billed Thrasher just coming up to her feeders at her house. The real highlight there was the Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Water Ranch. Again, take this with a grain of salt as it was May, but I got to see Gambel's Quail, Black-chinned and Anna's Hummingbird, Black-necked Stilts, American Avocet (with babies!), Baird's Sandpiper, Verdin, Bronzed Cowbird, Abert's Towhee, Black Phoebe, and the piece-de-resistance was a Least Bittern heard from the boardwalk on the fishing pond (and confirmed by a local birder who happened to be out that night and pointed me in its direction). If you look at the Phoenix area for August of Current Year on eBird, the *only* place that has 100+ species is the Riparian Preserve.
As a birder, I've been to Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona twice as of this trip. Despite this being my 2nd trip, and despite not getting to see Condors or spend as much time trapsing the mountains outside of Salt River Valley *or* get down to Tucson or any of the birding meccas in southern Arizona, I *still* got 14 lifers on my trip this May.
To wrap up an already long story, there's definitely a lot to see if you're willing to get out at dawn, dusk, or persevere (as the birds also do) in the heat. I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Hey all,
I have a trip to the Grand Canyon coming up in a couple of weeks. Most of our time (very tolerant non-birder hubby & I, haha) will be at the South Rim, but we will also get a chance to visit the North Rim and try to see the California Condor. We will also be spending a couple of nights at Phantom Ranch (Super excited!!!) and have a couple days in the Phoenix area before flying home. I've been researching and have a plan but thought I'd reach out and see if anyone had any favorite spots I should try and check out while in the area since it will be my first time to the area/state. Thanks!!

Dear Fellow bird lovers, This a late post, and I was late getting to Hi Lonesome this last Sunday morning. The birds had already begun getting quiet, and the species number was down. However, there were enough birds to keep me interested, and there were so many other things to please the eye. There is a nice variety of flowers blooming. A complete species list is on eBird. One of my current favorites is the Sedge Wren. The cap to the morning was given by an American Kestrel that flew over, kited for a bit and then cooperatively perched on the wire allowing good looks.
I could be wrong, but I believe some of the birds have begun migrating south. I'll go earlier next time.

The Swallow-tailed Kite first reported by Lisa Safell was viewed from the
loop road the runs along the side of Pool 10, heading toward Pools 14 &
15. It was soaring close to the bluffs at about 4:20-4:30
The Anhinga was resting (gular pouch vibrating heavily in the heat),
standing on the north bank among a small patch of mallow in front of short
trees, along the ditch that connects the Distribution Channel with the
ditch at the near end Pool 14 cul-de-sac.

It was in the creek across from the Jefferson City High School soccer fields on Stadium Drive. You can park on Mesa Drive.

Amy,
I am probably too late responding as I just saw this, but Eagle Bluffs is
about 8 miles SW of Columbia, off of highway K. Once you turn off of the
Highway stay on the main gravel road and after a mile or so you will Enter
Eagle Bluffs.. I know of one place where the road goes right but there is
also another going straight where you want to go right. If you have Google
Maps it will take you right in. Once there stay on the wider main road.
After going past a right turn closed for construction continue on the main
road until an intersection with a small building (Jumpbox) on the right and
a pit toilet on the left. On the right of that intersection is the start
of the distribution channel and it has been seen from there to the other
side of a cross maintenance road. The last report I saw it was on the
other side of the cross M road.
When I saw it was Sunday it was very close to the jumpbox.
If you go for it good luck!
Thanks,
Steve Griffaw

I'm enjoying reading all the posts about the anhinga since I am not able to
get up there to see it myself. However, it does bring to my mind the day in
September of 2009 that my husband and I were sitting outside our store
enjoying the fall weather when we saw a bird flying in from the north-west.
The bird changed from... crow? To... accipiter? To, no it's a cormorant?
Until it got almost overhead and we shouted to each other "that's an
anhinga!!"
Not sure where it came from or where it was going, but it was a wonderful
example of being in the right place at the right time.

The female/immature was in a tree where an observer said he'd seen it land last night, on the far side of the distribution channel above pool 13. Eleven people watched as it took off from the tree at approximately 9:44 a.m., made a couple circling passes over the area, gaining altitude as 11 people watched directly across from the tree. We last saw it heading ESE toward the bluffs along Perche Creek.
Jean Leonatti watched it a little longer than we did and reported it flying the the same direction we last saw it, then disappearing in the haze.

Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing the osprey article on the listserv. It is
well worth reading.
My attention was also drawn to Ted Floyd's tribute to Guy McCaskie. It
seems we have had more than the usual number of *in memoriam *pieces for
birders recently.
Floyd noted that everyone who spent time with him came away with a Guy
McCaskie story.
My first time with him was 30 years ago, brief, and at the time, I didn't
know who he was, but I still have a story.
I was standing with my scope surveying the San Diego River estuary across
from Robb Field when from behind came a deep voice, "Whatcha seein'?"
"Elegant Terns,'' I answered, with my face still in the scope
.
"Not here!" was the authoritative response.
I stepped back from the scope and pointed, "Those two, flying just over
there."
He followed my point and brought up his binoculars, followed by "Hummph,
they weren't here yesterday."
Perhaps it was as a reward for my sighting, I'll never know, but without
prompting, he gave me very clear directions, to a White Wagtail being seen
up in Orange County. I thanked him. He walked away. I found the wagtail
the next day, without knowing who the man was.
A year later, almost to the day, I was back at the estuary, face in the
scope, when from behind came, "Watcha seein' out there?" There were no
Elegant Terns that day, but I rattled off a half dozen species. He
countered with, "What about those x's there, and the y over there?" "Oh,"
I mumbled, seeing them for the first time, "thanks for pointing them out.
I followed your directions and saw the Wagtail last year. Thank you"
I knew this was probably my only chance to learn who the fellow was, so I
added, "I'm Edge Wade, from Missouri. I don't get here often, but it is a
favorite place for me."
"Guy McCaskie," he said, as he extended his hand, then ambled on down the
bike path.

I recently read a more extensive article about the ospreys unable to fledge young in Chesapeake Bay. The article I read was more extensive than this one. It told about the fisheries using airplanes to find the schools of fish, then sending boats and netting them. Also gave statistics about how few osprey are successfully nesting compared to a few years back. The article I read was in Audubon, Summer 2026.. Hopefully it is available online.

Guy McCaskie, a giant in the annals of American birding and field ornithology, has passed. McCaskie was universally recognized as “the godfather of California birding,†but his influence extended well beyond the Golden State.
The program is open to young birders between the ages of 10–18, and provides opportunities for birding, connecting with other young birders, and learning from experienced mentors in the fields of conservation, art, photography, and beyond. We hope you (and your friends) will join us!

I have no experience with the puc; however the original query said the puc can identify birds and bats. I thought I would pass along some general info regarding bat audio for anyone who might be interested.
Bats are especially difficult to identify through automatic detection methods. Accurate identification requires extremely clean recordings of the ultrasonic vocalizations. Ultrasonic sounds reflect from all sorts of surfaces, so clean audio is very difficult to capture. As a result, many if not most recordings result in ambiguous identification.
It is a lot of fun knowing what species of bats might be feeding above your yard but, as with Merlin, treat the results as suggestions.

Thanks, Bob, and the others that replied. This has been very helpful. think
I’m going to try the puc. I can plug it in on our covered patio. We live on
some acreage in southern Stone Co., and after 15 years, I’m seeing some
changes in the bird community around the yard. I’m not sure if it’s just
because the habitat has grown up and changed over time or I’m actually
witnessing the reported declines of some species over time, but this will
help me keep better track of what’s around going forward.
Happy birding!

Hi all,
The bird weather puc (see birdweather.com) is an automous listening device
that can be set up outside the home to monitor bird and bat calls 24/7. It
is linked to BirdNET, for identification and data-sharing worldwide. I’m
thinking of getting one but wondering if any of you have experience with
the device and can tell me what you think of it?

I sent my comments in to PROTECT this area. I'll never forget seeing "the
