Bill was also an Iowa Young Birders Board member when the organization
itself was still young. He frequently attended IAYB field trips as a
volunteer leader and was always happy to share his love of birds and
birding with kids and their families. We stayed in touch for a while after
his move to Oregon. He missed Iowa but greatly enjoyed being near his
grandkids.
He will be missed,

Thank you for posting this bit of sad news, Linda.
I will remember Bill as an excellent birder. He loved Linn County in
particular and participated in a Linn County Big Day in May of 2009. The
total of 142 was a record for the county at the time. He also served a
term on the IOU Records Committee. And he shared his editing and writing
skills with the IOU, serving on the IOU Publications Committee for
several years, and co-editing the IOU News newsletter for a year before
John and Anna Bissell took over. The IOU missed him immediately when he
moved to Oregon.
And I have missed his sharp wit/humor and good friendship.

Many of you may remember Bill Scheible. He moved to Portland, Oregon several years ago to be closer to his family.
He was an active member of the IOU while he lived here. His humor, knowledge and sharp hearing made him a fun person to bird with. He led field trips and co-led a trip to Southern California with Jim Fuller. He was passionate in supporting the Iowa Young Birders.
He traveled extensively when he was a medical school professor. When he became a birder, travel took on a whole new layer of fun and excitement. I can think of 7 countries he had birded extensively in. Perhaps his most meaningful trip was when he and a group of friends went to Micronesia. They visited Tinian. This small island had a large airfield during WWII, and Bill was very interested to see the base his father had flown from during the war.
Bill had been in failing health for several years, and it is with great sadness that I’m writing to let you know that he has passed away.

Coming west out of Ames this afternoon, I noticed some geese and several small shorebirds in a flooded pond on the south side of Lincoln Way. So I turned in and started searching the pond to find all of the following:
Killdeer ~20 Semi-palmated Plover 3 (photo with this note) Baird's Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper ~7 Pectoral Sandpiper 4 Solitary Sandpiper 1
Fall shorebird migration is definitely underway!

Date: 8/9/26 6:14 pm From: Wendy VanDeWalle <wtvandewalle...> Subject: [ia-bird] Summer field reports data |
Hi all!
Hope you had a good summer of birding! Our summer field report covers June
and July, and on the 15th of August we will be downloading the eBird and
IOU data. So this is your friendly notice to please finish up any reporting
of your rare or unusual birds. If you don’t have a picture, please put a
detailed description of what the bird looked like and how it was acting in
the comments section. Simply putting “Merlin ID†will not suffice as Merlin
can often be wrong. Also, if you observed any breeding, nesting or
fledglings, please mark the appropriate breeding code in eBird and then go
to the website and enter the ages of the birds in the age box. If you need
any help with reporting, please let me know. I may have missed a few of the
Facebook reports of rare birds this season, so if you know of any, please
encourage them to submit their sightings.
Happy birding!

Date: 8/5/26 7:00 pm From: Neil Bernstein <tornataornata...> Subject: [ia-bird] Request for content for Iowa Bird Life |
Hi birders, as strange as it may seem, I am gathering content for 2027 Iowa Bird Life. Essays, reflections, art, book reviews, research reviews, and poetry are always welcome. If you know of a young person who you can profile as an up and coming birder/ornithologist, please have them contact me. Also, please consider profiling yourself or another for Meet and Iowa Birder articles.
It is better to send content to me directly rather than submit it on the IOU website.
As always, I am open to learning how I can improve IBL, so send your ideas and concerns. We are working hard on what will be a packed September issue, and December is also pretty full.
Thank you.............Neil

My morning started with a leisurely flyover and circle of an adult Mississippi Kite when I took the dog over to the cemetery. I (again) didn't spot any crossbills, or later in the afternoon either, but two juvs and an adult female Red Crossbill were working through the sunflower stand we have planted outside our family room window at 6 PM.

Date: 8/3/26 2:38 pm From: Rick Hollis <xiboia...> Subject: [ia-bird] More bad news from FEDs |
The US Fish and Wildlife Service is poised to remove the Drain Tile Setback
rules that protect the wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of the
western United States. This region produces 50-75% of North America’s
ducks. Drain tiles are perforated pipes that drain wetlands. Under
current rules, *lands under easements with the USFWS* must keep them a safe
distance from wetlands under easement. Each plan is individualized to
accommodate each landowner.
If the Setback rule is eliminated, the Prairie Pothole region could lose
20-50% of its duck breeding capacity. This will have a big impact on our
duck populations.
Please join MOS in defending this rule. You can register your concern by
signing this Ducks Unlimited Petition
<https://ducks.quorum.us/campaign/duckfactory/?_hsmi=430361988>.
If you have a few minutes, please comment directly on the USFWS Comment Page
<https://www.regulations.gov/commenton/FWS-HQ-NWRS-2026-2641-0001>. A few
lines expressing your concern is all that is needed. Personalized comments
are highly effective!
*The Deadline is August 7, so please act quickly.*

Date: 8/3/26 12:15 pm From: weatherbird58 <weatherbird58...> Subject: [ia-bird] White-eyed Vireos & Red Crossbills - south of Boone |
This morning I hiked over to the old pine plantation in the northeast portion of Ledges State Park in hopes of finding Red Crossbills. I did find 8 or more crossbills, moving around in the old pines from time to time, but I didn't see a whole lot of feeding on cones. Maybe the declining pines are holding the crossbills in my area.
I also spent quite a bit of time with at least two White-eyed Vireos! They were foraging and singing on-and-off in the multi-height thorny shrubs that mingle with the pines. Many areas are impenetrable. I recorded many Merlin audio files, and some videos that highlight the songs well but don't show the birds. Merlin never put an ID on the White-eyed Vireo for some reason. It's the classic up, down, up chortle. Some files even have both crossbills and White-eyed Vireos clearly identifiable at the same time, something of a double rarity here in Boone County!
Other birds were pretty quiet, with the exception of Catbirds and Pewees.
Please note, Ledges State Park is closed to vehicles and public access for the rest the August. That includes the campground and hiking trails. Roads and parking lots will be completely re-paved, with drainage improvements. The pine plantation is always a difficult place to get to and explore anyway, due to distance from parking, terrain and nasty vegetation.

Date: 7/26/26 10:56 am From: weatherbird58 <weatherbird58...> Subject: [ia-bird] Red Crossbills - 2 miles south of Boone |
Sunday morning, for the third day in a row, I've seen Red Crossbills in or over my yard.
On Friday afternoon, I heard what sounded like a sizable flock, but could not see them due to trees. A bit later, two Red Crossbills landed in a dead ash tree, providing time to get a Merlin recording and a view through an old pair of binoculars I keep in the workshop.
Saturday, I periodically heard a crossbill or two, but not close. In the afternoon, I saw a single bird on a flyby.
This morning, I was perspiring in the garden for awhile and could hear crossbills. A group of four flew directly overhead, vocalizing as they went. I'm not sure what is keeping them in the area.
FYI everyone: Starting August 3rd, Ledges State Park will be totally closed for a 100% repaving project on all roads and parking lots. In preparation for this, the Canyon Road is already closed, and the county road through the park bottoms past the Lost Lake trailhead could close at any time.
For other yard reports, this morning, a Caroline Wren sang loudly for several minutes, the first I've heard in quite a few years. I'm also happy to report three friendly young chickadees. It's something of a relief after last fall's precipitous drop in Chickadee numbers around here.
