Date: 10/1/26 3:01 pm From: Erik Johnson via groups.io <cassowary43...> Subject: [labird] Louisiana Winter Hummingbird Report #2
LABIRDers:
Over the coming weeks as Ruby-throated Hummingbirds numbers start waning, western birds will be showing up more and more, so don't give up on those feeders! I would appreciate any and all reports of these birds as they arrive, and please provide the following information:
- Your name - Your address (town only is acceptable) - First observed (FO) date (or, if discovered while banding or marking other birds, the date it was observed) - Species - Age (Adult, immature, unknown) - Sex (Male, female, unknown) - Whether banded, when and by whom.
If additional information is learned through further observation or banding, please report those updates and I'll make the changes. Also, please report the last observed (LO) date, if possible, when the bird leaves. This you can do more easily when the hummer has been banded and marked.
A summary of what has been reported so far is below.
Happy hummingbirding!

Sent from my iPhone. C Lyon
La-birders,
Melissa and I had an immature Violet-green Swallow at the Yates Tract of the Red-River NWR late this last evening 26 Sept. It was still there with a mixed group of swallows including a couple of Cave Swallows when we left around sunset. They were flying over pool 1 which was being flooded and this is the furthest north pool and near the highway.

Date: 9/21/26 5:27 pm From: Jennifer Outlaw Coulson via groups.io <jenniferocoulson...> Subject: [labird] Date Change for Hearing on Purple Martin housing in Harahan
Dear LABIRD,
I am providing this message on behalf of the Orleans Audubon Society and two of our members, Andrew and Carol Stamm. They are residents of Harahan who keep Purple Martin houses in their backyard. The City of Harahan has a suit against them, claiming that the Purple Martins are a nuisance, in spite of the fact that Harahan has declared itself to be a wild bird sanctuary. The following is an update about an upcoming hearing for the case: DATE CHANGE!!!!!Show Your Support for the Stamms and Purple Martins onNov. 18 at 9:00 a.m. (tentative new date)24th Judicial District Court in Gretna
Located in: Jefferson Parish Government Center
Address: 200 Derbigny St #2100, Gretna, LA 70053
The Stamms appealed their case to the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna, where the case was assigned to Judge Stephen Enright, Jr. A hearing date for pre-trial motions is tentatively set for Wednesday, November 18, 2026 at 9:00 a.m., where the Stamms will attempt to have the case dismissed. Your presence there will show your concern for Purple Martins in Harahan and everywhere.
*Note: This hearing, originally scheduled for September 23rd, has been rescheduled and tentatively moved to November 18th. Please spread the word!*
Since this case is now a national concern due to the possibility of an adverse precedent, the Stamms welcome all supporters to appear at the motion hearing, wearing their Purple Martin t-shirts, if possible, available here:
Date: 9/13/26 6:42 pm From: Evelyn Cooper via groups.io <emcooper34...> Subject: Re: [labird] Cats and birds
My daughter and I witnessed a cat jumping up on the platform bird feeder I
have near the den and grabbed the bird and ran off. I read that cats can
jump six feet or more. There is a stovepipe guard on the pool holding the
feeder but the cat jump right past it landed on the bird. So, my solution
was to raise the feeder higher than the cat can jump. I hope this what you
are asking for.
