Nothing new! There’s only one spot now
For shorebirds here - Motz turf. All this
Rain has a low lying area flooded. Yea!
The way this weather is going the great
Miami might never be really low enough
Consistently for shorebirds. This is killing me…. Oh well!

My goal is lowered to 220. I am missing too Much and running out of time. In fact I am probably not available for much
Birding now until Sat. Not even sure
I will have time to chase if something
Needed shows up!

The ode show has been great! Striped
Saddlebag!

Good birding all.

Stuck on 210! I was ready to ditch my goal of 225. Missing too much! And not having
Success here finding stuff! But checked my records - a lot of my tern sightings are
Mid august and sept. Still time! My one and only stilt sandpiper for the county though
Was late July…… and missed today! A friend had a small shorebird flock at lost bridge.
It’s moving around too much….. I could not relocate. I should probably hit tomorrow
And see if I can find the flock. But I need a break from Hamilton! I was going to chase
The summit swallow tailed kite! But 3 1/2 hours one way…… I’ll wait! Chase another….

I will either hit Kentucky spots. Or Rocky fork state park in highland county. I am told
The lake is drawn down down for dam repairs. Ooohhh. Shorebirds!

When I was planning my Hamilton big year, I banked on shorebirds at the river in the
Summer. Never did I imagine we would have the wettest summer I have experienced
Here! The great Miami is too high! Sigh……

Oh well.

Good birding all.

From the abandoned road converted to a path, I got within 50 feet of the Willet as it foraged on mud flats east of the path.
It then moved to the west side of the path and foraged in the shallow water.

From: Canterbury, Ronald (canterrd) <00000951b275ca19-dmarc-request...>
Subject: [Ohio-birds] Call for data for Ohio Cardinal Summer 2026
Dear Birders,
As summer is nearing the end and fall is gradually upon us, it is a good time to look for migrating shorebirds. The warblers will be coming soon. Just a few days ago I banded a Blue-winged Warbler in heavy molt. It is also time to send me your summer 2026 data/sightings. Please send your June and July sightings to:
Ron Canterbury, 1585 Summit Hills Drive, Cincinnati OH, 45255 or <ron.canterbury...>

In addition to sightings, we welcome photos, anecdotes, book/e-media/app reviews, general interest articles, and research papers. If you enter your sightings into eBird, you do not need to send a report – we download all the entries directly from Cornell. Feel free, however, to expand on items in your eBird list in a separate note to me, because I can’t look at every note in eBird.

If you attach a file (Word, Excel, ASCII text, or similar) to an email, please include your name and the season in the file name and also within the file itself. Calling the file “smith-summer26” instead of “sightings” will save me time. And digital photo files, please; send prints only with prior approval. If you post photos to FaceBook, Flickr, or the like, you can send me links to them rather than the photo files themselves. Photos and links go to Photo Editor Tom Fishburn, <tom561tom...>

The deadline is August 21. Thank you in advance. Have a great fall season!

Here is also an update on the Cardinal: I just sent the Winter 2023-2024 issue to layout. I hope to see it published this month. We continue to look for assistant editors and additional help to help me catch-up the journal. It is beyond a massive undertaking for a single editor in its current format or at least with my full-time job (doing three full-time jobs actually: academics, research, and editor [is non-paid], and are by no means pleasant at times with all three combined). **Please do not abandon the OOS, I'm trying! The science is important to keep and birds need us as much as we need them! If questions, please feel free to email me off list: <ron.canterbury...>

Ohio Senate Bill 1 and federal mandates and laws, example Title II, aimed at academics got me further behind this past spring. Were out of my control!

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Hamilton big year

Stuck on 210! Last bird was the gallinule. 6 weeks ago! I am awaiting shorebird variety
Down here. Hasn’t happened yet….. lost bridge - the river itself - looks perfect! Sandbars,
Low water levels. Hopefully variety soon! The bean field at Armleder looks very good too!
Sigh….. at least there’s odes to concentrate on in the July doldrums here! A red necked
Grebe showed up on the great Miami in Montgomery county. That was a fun chase! A July and county bird!

Good birding all. August is coming!
