Date: 8/21/26 6:43 am From: Christina Nieves via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Cedar waxwings and Chimney Swifts
Was observing a small flock of Cedar Waxwings in trees near the river and the old brick building at Montgomery Mills in Windsor Locks. One of the waxwings was apparently interested in something in a 4th floor apartment. It repeatedly flew up to the window, as if it wanted to get in. Iâve never seen a waxwing display that behavior. Perhaps someone had a flowering plant, but for obvious reasons, didnât want to been seen using binoculars to look in someoneâs window!
A couple days ago in early evening, I saw 2 Chimney Swifts fly into the tall, brick chimney stack here at the old mill. Iâve monitored that stack pre and post sunset in years past, to no avail. I hadnât looked at all this year, but will begin again, to see if we may have had nests or a roost starting. It would seem ideal as itâs a tall chimney stack, conveniently located between the river and canal, where they can be seen and heard feasting on many small flies and insects.

The Baird's Sandpiper was scared off by human activity after just a short while observing and photographing it. Chris, Tom Baptist and myself were unable to locate it again, unfortunately. It flew west and may still be around, but it was not relocated in our search of all of the west end puddles.
The puddles have dried somewhat compared to Friday, but they are still present and always worth checking this time of year!

About an hour ago, I found a MARBLED GODWIT at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. The bird is in the west end of the park, forging in the large puddle between the road and the septic field. There are also Solitary and Pectoral Sandpipers, peep sandpipers and other shorebirds and gulls there to enjoy.
When I left, the bird was still there and the park is open until 8 PM so it is worth a try if you can get there!

I hope that my post about the Lesser Frigatebird didn't cast any doubt on the report. As Jesse pointed out, the photos are in the Macaulay library because that's where eBird media is stored. I have no reason to doubt that the observers saw and photographed the bird, and I haven't heard any suggestions to the contrary.
Most of the GroupMe discussion was around the fact that the report was not submitted sooner. The vast majority of birders wouldn't have the ability to get to the island and, even for the few who have boats, it is illegal to land on the island. Plus, landing there would be pointless since the bird was seen flying in the vicinity, not roosting or nesting.
If the CT Birds community knew that the bird was around, they could've at least scoped for it from land. Many Wilson's Storm Petrels have been seen over the last week and were identifiable, despite being very far out in the sound. At a minimum, many of us would probably have visited the coast to keep an eye out.
The Lesser Frigatebird is rare for our country, let alone our small state, and I think most birders here would look for it responsibly, had they known there was a chance to see it.
The reason for my post the other day was to alert our community that the bird may still be around. The possible sighting of a frigatebird species in North Milford reminded me of the revelation a few days earlier about the June 24th Lesser Frigatebird sighting at Falkner Island. This bird is far, far from its normal range and if it has found a suitable food source it may still be in our area. Since many on this list are not on the GroupMe, I wanted you to be aware!

It is with great sadness that I am writing to let the birding community know that Ray Belding passed away on July 29th. Ray had been birding since 1966 when he took an ornithology course at the U. of New Hampshire. As a professional, he worked as a school social worker in Naugatuck. Working in education gave him the opportunity to travel extensively during vacation periods. In the late 80's he began leading trips for Caligo Ventures. First, to Costa Rica and later to places in Venezuela, Ecuador, Belize and Panama. He is a past president of the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and had been compiler for their Christmas Bird Census from 1976 to 2021. Ray will be missed for making CBC compliations entertaining and the Wednesday's with Ray morning bird walks each May.

In case you hadn't heard, an eBird checklist from June 24th was submitted the other day, including photos, of an apparent LESSER FRIGATEBIRD. To put into context just how rare this species is for our area, you would normally have to be in Madagascar, Southeast Asia or Australia to see one. And there has only been one ever sighted in United States Atlantic waters in history (in Maine 66 years ago), according to eBird.
Apparently this MEGA rarity was seen flying near Falkner Island off of Guilford by two people working for the NFWS documenting the tern colony. They said that they delayed their report because of 'protocol' that they can't report anything rare.... Here's a link to their eBird report which includes photos of the bird and their comments: https://ebird.org/checklist/S377967035
The fact that this bird was not reported sooner is upsetting to many in our community, and our CT Birds rules prevents me from repeating the first words I said when I saw that report... :)
HOWEVER just now, someone submitted a message through the COA website believing that they may have seen a Frigatebird flying over their house at 11:45 AM today in North Milford.
Pretty exciting to think that the bird may still be around. I would strongly suggest that everyone keep their eyes to the skies right now!

I ... wanted to reach out to you to see if you may be interested in teaching a class for our local adult-education program. I act as a Site Coordinator for Northwest Connecticut's Region 1's EdAdvance program, and I am currently planning our Spring 2027 course offerings. Would you be interested in teaching an Introduction to Falconry Class--or a similar class--for adult students ages 18+? We are doing online and in-person classes. It sounds like a wonderful subject for students to learn more about. Teaching a class can also be a great opportunity to broaden the instructor's audience and to emphasize one's brand. I enclose a very brief Course Proposal Form to submit along with a brief bio/syllabus to that effect for your completion at your earliest convenience. We pay our instructors $20/hour.
Spring 2027 non-credit enrichment online classes can be held as well. Many of our online courses are held via Zoom (either the instructor's own Zoom account, which can be held anytime, or a Zoom account that our agency can provide you that comes with a moderator to handle the technical stuff, which can be held Monday through Thursday, anytime between 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.).
In-person classes can be held at any of our many sites that range from Falls Village to Watertown (chances are, one of our sites is near you). Depending on the site's schedule, in-person classes are held Mondays through Thursdays, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. All classes are weekly and can be scheduled anytime between February 2027 and mid-May 2027, excluding holidays. Classes are generally two hours maximum. The number of classes in a course can range from one class to a total five maximum; if a second-level course to the subject is desired, we can develop that as well.
We are putting together courses for the Spring 2027 semester in the coming months. Many returning instructors will soon be filling up available time slots and classrooms. We would like to fit in your class. Please be sure to submit the completed very brief Course Proposal Form at your earliest convenience if you are interested. EdAdvance reaches about 81,000 households, and nearly double the number of individuals, and it would be great to have such a class among our courses offered. Our courses have been acclaimed by several local media, including most recently by the newspaper The Republican-American (Waterbury, CT).
If you have any questions, please reach out to me at the below contact information. I hope you will consider doing a class. I look forward to being in touch. I appreciate your kind consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will be glad to assist.
Thank you,

Just noted on the online New York Times newspaper a nice but short obit on the late Guy Tudor, a great bird illustrator of the birds of South America.

History Walk Explores Past and Preservation of Great Meadows Marsh
The Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge will host a free History Walk at 10am on Saturday June 27th, highlighting the remarkable journey of Great Meadows marsh—from decades of failed development schemes to its eventual protection as vital wildlife habitat. Participants will learn how proposed airport expansions, dredging operations, and shoreline subdivisions ultimately gave way to a growing recognition of the marsh’s ecological importance for migratory birds, terrapins, and other coastal species. The program will be led by two of Audubon’s marsh stewards, who have been doing hands-on conservation work in the marsh for the past several summers.
